SUBJECT
Financial Regulation and Insurance: preparing for future challenges
The insurance industry emerged relatively unscathed in the recent crisis of 2007-2009 and the assumption has been made by many that the insurance sector is therefore largely systemically irrelevant, and does not require the same macro-prudential surveillance as other financial sectors. But others such as the International Association of Insurance Supervisors disagree. This lecture will examine some of the potential threats to the stability of the financial system that the insurance sector and insurance activities might pose in the future. It will also indicate how financial regulation might position itself to address these threats as it evolves in response to developments in the financial markets.
