Abstract:
The guest lecture offers a critical assessment of the main challenges facing the Eurozone, i.e. the collective territory of the Member States of the European Union that have adopted the Europa as their currency, at the beginning of 2015.
Questions can be raised about the effectiveness of the economic governance reforms that have been implemented in recent years and the degree of technocratisation of the fiscal policy of the Member States this has entailed.
Moreover, the position of the European Central Bank as an independent monetary policy authority has come under pressure both in legal and political terms, resulting from its role as crisis manager (unconventional monetary policy measures) and as new European banking supervisor (Banking Union).
Finally, the heated legal and political debates surrounding the continuation of the financial assistance to the Eurozone Member State Greece raise doubts about the unity in the Eurozone and the European Union as a whole.
All of this has potentially major implications for the future of European (economic) integration.
