In the morning of May 7th, 2016, the final of the second “KWM Cup-Future Legally Elite Championship” was held in the East Hall of Koguan Law School of Shanghai Jiaotong Univerisity. After the individual quarter-final in middle-April, ten teams entered into the final from Fudan University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Tongji University, East China University of Political Science and Law, Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, Zhejiang University, Nanjing University and Suzhou University. The students who represented our school are Zhangke, Li Xiaoqing, Zhangjing and Chedi. Thirteen partners and senior lawyers from King& Wood Mallesons serve as judges. Deputy Dean of our law school, Professor Huling, is also in attendance.
The first part of final was ice-breaking game. Everyone regrouped the team via a random number in order to play a drama. Through the one-hour of drawing masks, making up plots and onstage performance, students are familiar with each other during mutual communication and coordination. The tense atmosphere of competition was eased and the friendship between universities was strengthened.
After a short pause, the final started at 1 pm including “every minute counts” portion and debate portion. The form of play in “every minute counts” portion is competitive answer of knowledge. Every team chose a set of questions from ten sets of questions and answered it in limited time. The players need to finish 30 legal multiple choice in 8 minutes. One right answer could add 10 grades, while wrong answer or waiver did not deduct grades. The four teams who won the highest grades could have the access to next part-debate. Although the players from our school were the last group to answer the question, they still showed lawyer’s calm and scrupulous quality under the pressure of other team’s high grades. Not only did they answered all the questions ahead of time, but also got the highest 210 grades.
The next debate portion is the most important and exciting moment of this final. Teams from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Fudan University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and Shanghai International Studies University promoted to this portion. After the draw lots, our school encountered with Shanghai International Studies University. The form of competition is freestyle debate. Each party would be allocated a tutor, a lawyer from King& Wood Mallesons. During the preparation time, players from our school communicate thoughts and experience with each other and determine the whole roadmap and standpoint. Different from the last match, our players kept calm and steady, expressed clearly and thought carefully, which gained acclaim from judge. Finally, our school won the third prize after Shanghai Jiaotong University and Fudan University. It is worth mentioning that Zhangke from SHUFE Law School achieved the only Best Oralist, which is a manifestation of our players’ high level of expertise and professional quality in law.
After the award ceremony, players from different universities shared life and study experience with each other and built up deep friendship. They also actively communicated with the lawyers present and learned valuable comments in order to achieve much more progress. In conclusion, this “KWM Cup-Future Legally Elite Championship” provided a good chance and wide platform for students to apply their knowledge into practice and steel themselves. Hope that more and more students could participate in all kinds of legal competitions after-class during which challenge with themselves and show good spirits!
