At 6:30 pm April 14, 2015, Lawyer Nie Weidong and Lawyer Ye Yongqing, two partners of King & Wood Mallesons, gave us a successful and wonderful briefing session at the Administrative Building. They delivered a detailed introduction about the law firm, King & Wood Mallesons to law school students, as well as the necessary good qualities to be a good lawyer. Then HR Sally described to us the process of taking the championship “King & Wood Cup-The future star of Lexpert”. The whole lecture lasted about one and a half hours.

In the first part of the briefing session, Mr. Nie helped us to get a better and more comprehensive knowledge about King & Wallesons. He said that almost all their business is closely connected with commercial activities.

Mr. Nie has been a lawyer for more than 15 years. He said that the most profound thought through his work is that the road to be an outstanding lawyer will be broader and broader if you have a vast field of vision. Now the company group which he works for has a very detailed division of labor and has obtained a high level of profession. Meanwhile, he said that it was of great of importance to have a command of law, foreign language, economics and finance for being a good lawyer.

Then Mr. Nie introduce the source of the law firm’s name. King & Wood combined with Mallesons, an Australian law firm, in 2012, and now its business area mainly include the mainland, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia. He believes that King & Wood Mallesons will be more and more internationalized with the hard work of all staffs.

Last but not the least, Mr. Nie applead us who want to be a lawyer in the future to join in King & Wood Mallesons. He said the management mode and the enterprise culture of King & Wood Mallesons will help employees become more and more professional. All in all, joining in King & Wood Mallesons is a very attractive opportunity on your way of being a lawyer you dream to be.

During the second part, Lawyer Ye Yongqing, the visiting professor of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, put the importance of his talk on what King & Wood Mallesons needs. He once has been a partner with Deloitte (Shanghai), mainly responsible for business consulting in the aspect of tax. Before answering, he asked what our answers were. One student stood up, said that he thought King & Wood Mallesons may need inter-disciplinary talent who was good in English, Law and economics, and who had a good understanding of the closed relationship between law and economics.

Mr. Ye agreed with him. Meanwhile, combined with his own working experience both in Deloitte and in King & Wood Mallesons, he thought the following qualities are expected:

1.     Be cautious about dealing with our customers’ needs. We must stand on the position of our customers to consider the problems and we should try our best to safeguard their interest when we provide solutions;

2.     Persistance. Both the attitude and the ability to insist. Lawyers always have o lot of work every day, so it is very necessary to have good health and keep a better psychological state, which are important whatever king of work you do;

3.     The ability to learn new things is also crucial for being a good lawyer. As for every case, or every problem, we should learn to understand the principles beneath the surface of it. At the same time, we must be good at setting up our own logic systems, thinking about the way things are;

4.     The courage to try new things, instead of getting back and being afraid of difficulties. Mr. Ye gave us a sincere suggestion that the first principle we should take into consideration is where we can learn more new things and which is more helpful to our career development when we choose our workplace.

At last, HR Sally gave a specific introduction about the process and details of the champion “King & Wood Cup-The future star of Lexpert”.  Eight universities, Fudan University, East China University of Political Science and Law, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai International Studies University, Shanghai Trade University, Nanjing University and Zhejiang University, are allowed to take part in this contest.

All law school students from universities above can join in. Participating students will make a team, a group of six, on their own willingness. If there is less than six students in your team, the tutor, Zhou Yan will make unified distribution.

In the preliminary stage, the lawyers of King & Wood Mallesons will provide the case and the necessary background information. Every team member should cooperate with each other, analyze the case, design possible solutions and form the final copy. We must remember to submit the results within the prescribed time. Lawyers will carry out in the selection and select four winning teams in each university to participate in the semi-finals. The semi-finals will be taken place in the form of debate. They finally shall pick up four winning teams and one special award. Winners can get not only testimonials, fat bonuses, but also the internships and training opportunities in a long term.

Before the end of the briefing session, students, who have great interest in the working condition of King & Wood Mallesons, raised questions to Mr. Nie and Mr. Ye, who gave them satisfying and sincere answers then. This briefing session ended up with students’ warm applause.
