From November 3th to 4th, 2014, our college delegation visited the Law School of Soochow University successfully. The college delegation included Zhou Jiepu, CCP Secretary of SHUFE Law School; Deputy ProfessorGe Weijun, director of J.M educating center; Dr. Shang Shu; Dr. Li Yu; Dr. Fan Jian; Liu Yanhao, part-time supervisor of graduate students in our school and policy director ofthe Research Office of Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court.
During the visit, our college delegation attended three well-prepared symposiums held by Soochow University Law School.
The first symposiumwas an “Integrated CommunicatingSymposium”. The representatives from Soochow University Law School were: Hong Jiayin, Dean of Soochow University Law School; Lin Sanqin, Associate Dean of Soochow University Law School; Wang Yumei, Director of Cross-Strait Affairs Center in Office of International and Cross-Strait Academic Exchanges(ICAE)in Soochow University; Associate Professor Lin Yuting; AssistantProfessor Hu Boyan; Assistant Professor Lu Ziyang; Assistant Professor Fan Xiuyu; Secretary Chen Hongshu.At the beginning, Hong Jiayin, Dean of Soochow University Law School, made a welcome speech on behalf of which , expressing their warmest welcome to our college delegation. And then, he introduced the brief information on Anglo-American law courses and court debate practicing courses of Soochow University Law School, hoping that communication between two parties be strengthened in the future.In response, Zhou Jiepu, CCP Secretary of SHUFE Law School, delivered a speech on behalf of our college. She said it was our honor to communicate with Soochow University Law School.
At the same time, she introduced SHUFE law school’s development in recent years indiscipline construction, faculty, scientific research, personnel training,internationalization, etc.Also, she conveyed our hopes to cementand develop our relationswith Soochow University Law School constantly through improving our work in students-exchange program and summer-school program etc. Afterwards, Lin Sanqin, Associate Dean of Soochow University Law School,introduced the whole picture of Soochow University Law School in detail, from educational system, staff statistics concerning full-time teachers, part-time teachers andexecutive staffs, brief introduction on full-time teachers, courses, students activity and so on, among which, experiences of legal and humanistic care(such as publishingcareer manualsfor people in legal profession per year), improving characteristic courses(such as Anglo-American law courses), taking measures to consolidating competitiveness in the future employment(such as legal service agency, service team propagating rule of law and legal camp for high school students) are attached with great importance and are very eye-catching.
The second symposium was entitled“Anglo-American Law Courses Symposium”. Associate Professor Yu Qimin, Associate Professor Lin Heng, Assistant Professor He Wanjun and AssistantProfessor Fan Xiuyongfrom Soochow University Law Schoolwere present.Firstly, Associate Professor Yu Qimingave a detailed introductiontostate ofAnglo-American Law Courses from teaching courses, related activities, academic communication and development of schoolfellows. In curriculum setting, students should earn 24 credits which are compulsory. These consist of 4 credits in a Thematic Introduction for Learning Anglo-American Law, 6 credits in Anglo-American Tort Law, 6 credits in Anglo-American Contractual Law, 4 credits in Anglo-American Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law and 4 credits in U.S. Federal Constitution). Of course, there were other optional courses such as Legal English, which can help students prepare judicial examination. So far, they were promoting courses in English actively. Students must choose one compulsory course to be learned in English. Related activities concerning Anglo-American Law include: holding Anglo-American Law Coursesteaching seminar (including practice) every year, instructing students to take part in debate competition in English inside and outside school; members in Anglo-American Law Research Center support in their specialties, such as teaching and research on International Law, Technology And Intellectual Property Law, Financial And Economic Law; Seminar in Xi City starts in the summer holiday, spreading teaching methods to mainland students, etc. Academic communication of Anglo-American Law include: discussing with universities abroad about cooperation and waiver and transference of credits; hosting seminars with external organization like China Society of Comparative Lawand so on. What’s more, a lot of top executives in relevant technology industry in Taiwan graduated from Soochow University Law School. Their main works were relative to applying Anglo-American Law to business like contract review,negotiation concerning foreign affairs. And schoolfellows going abroad for further studying work as not only American lawyers but also head of law schools. Secondly, associate professor Lin Heng shared teaching experience in Anglo-American Law from 4 aspects. These were: motivation to learn Anglo-American Law, core mission to learn Anglo-American Law, challenges to learn Anglo-American Law and review of teaching methods. Thirdly, Professor Lin heng shared his experience in teaching Anglo-American Law with the attendants in 4 aspects: motivation of learning , core task, challenge and methods in teaching. Then, assistant professor He Wanjun concluded three obstacles in studying Anglo-American Law for freshmen. On the one hand, they never learned law before and they were lack of social experience. On the other hand, their English was not good enough. Taking the obstacles into consideration, Ms. He referred to simplify teaching process. For instance, using blunt words and refining legal problems from cases. She thought it was important for students to preview before lessons. Fourthly, assistant Fan Xiuyu provided course outline of Anglo-American Tort Law and Legal English which she taught, emphasizing it was vital to rise interest of students in Anglo-American Law. Finally, Dr. Shang Shu from our college delegation introduced the current situation of Anglo-American Law Courses in our school, containing idea, training target, curriculum setting, selection of students,evaluation mode, teaching method,effect and so on. The symposium ended after a heated discussion about the confusion and experience in teaching Anglo-American Law.
The third was a “Summative Symposium: Practices in Court Debate”. Associate Professor Cheng Yongyu, part-time professor Huang Yangshou and assistant professor He Jiafang attended the symposium on behalf of Soochow University Law School. At first, Associate Professor Cheng Yongyu madean opening speech and introduced representatives from Soochow University Law School. Afterwards, Zhou Jiepu, CCP Secretary of SHUFE Law School, gave an address and introduced members in our delegation. Next, Huang Yangshou, asenior professor in Soochow University Law School, summarized origin, conception, practice of coursesof “mock law office and moot court debate competition” and “court debate practicing”. During his explaining, Associate Professor Cheng Yongyu supplemented it occasionally. Competition activities and practice courses were featured for undergraduate students, the macro targets of which were not only training excellent lawyers’ professional skills earlier, but also imparting lawyers’ mission, ethical quality and other soft power to make students become an admirable lawyer with ideals, aspirations, ability and political integrity. At last, our college delegation interacted with representatives of Soochow University on some issues like credits setting, teaching methods and course materials.
The three symposiums above were all held on the first floor in Soochow University Law School building. All the members in our college delegation were fully involved. And they collected a lot of relative material. Besides the symposiums, our college delegation was showed around the building and district of Soochow University Law School. Our teachers also visited two students of SHUFE who were transferred to Soochow University. They came from School of Law and School of International Business Administration, studying in Soochow University Law School and Soochow University Business School respectively now.
During the visit to Soochow University Law School, our college delegation received a warm reception. SHUFE Law School will further expandmulti-level cooperation with Soochow University Law School, learning beneficial experience from them, especially in teaching Anglo-American Law and Practice of Law; promote interchange, broaden horizons, focus on improve academicresearch and personnel quality, train top talents of finance and law.
