On October 23, 2014, the first routine activities of SHUFE Law association were held successfully. The respected Professor Tang Guanhong attended and gave the students an impressive lecture about some key elements of being a good lawyer. Then a senior fellow Mr. Yang Kefei addressed a speech about his career in several international law firms. Afterwards, the students asked questions about the skills they will probably need to enter a law firm and the pros and cons of working in a foreign law firm.

In the lecture of Professor Tang, to start with, the members were invited to introduce themselves and talk about what they want to do in the future. Many said they’d like to be lawyers, some said they’d like to be company managers, others said they’d like to work for an NGO like the Bill and Melinda Gates fund. Besides, there were still a large portion of students admitted they are still seeking. After the introduction of the students, Professor Tang said something about her working experiences, she never stop making efforts and still trying things that makes difference.

Then she pointed out 5 factors of being a good lawyer and explained her reasons. Being professional, having a good business sense, building your network and thinking like a lawyer and being humorous, were the main points for a valuable lawyer. She also illustrated her opinion of an ideal life style by giving the students some slogans she prefers: Work hard yet work smart, and at the same time, have fun.

Following Professor Tang’s lecture, an upperclassman of law school addressed his speech “How to survive in an International Law Firm”.

He gave the students a 5W and 1H doctrine with regard to “what do you want to, what are you really interest in, where to work, who to follow, when to leave and how to perform”. Meanwhile, Mr. Yang told the students some details including learning how to manage you time properly, being kind to everyone in your office, always trying to stay positive, to which one has to pay attention when working in a multicultural company.

Towards the end of this salon, Professor Tang and Mr. Yang took some questions from the students who were inspired to consider how to accomplish their university period successfully and build a bright path for the future. Many students said they have known more about the life of a lawyer and have already been looking forward to living such an exciting and venturous life.

The salon ended in round applause of all teachers and students attending.
