On Nov. 7th, 2013, Professor Loukas Mistelis from Queen Mary London School delivered an inspiring and significant speech named “Importance of Mooting in Legal Education - International Commercial Arbitration - Skills, Objectives and Advocacy Techniques” to SHUFE Law students and gave special suggestions for the competition to the students who will take parts in International Commercial Arbitration Cup. Ms. Shang Shu hosted the lecture and showed a warm welcome to Professor Loukas.

The lecture is mainly about the topic “International commercial arbitration advocacy general guideline”. Professor started with the introduction of arbitration which is a private and non-national system of dispute resolution. He illustrated the advantages of arbitration and reasons to choose it rather than litigation. According to a pie graph, the biggest reason why 49% people support arbitration is that it deals matters without unnecessary delay and expense. At the same time, parties can also be more relatively free to agree how their disputes are resolved with the minimal court intervention. He then introduced features of different types of arbitration including traditional commercial arbitration, investment treaty arbitration, transnational arbitration, compulsory arbitration, consumer arbitration and sports arbitration.

The second part of the speech is the guidance of Commercial Arbitration Cup. He gave out many details and practical suggestions on the preparation and tips for the oral submission. He stated some general notes about the main presentation, like the body language, eye contact and use of hands and also oral tips, for example presenter should be straight forward rather than evasive.

At the end of lecture, Commercial Arbitration Cup members and also Doctor Shang actively raised many questions relating to the skills of preparation and details of competition. Professor collected the questions and explained them in order. At last, Doctor Shang thanked Professor and showed that the speech was very helpful for team members and also for the students who interested in arbitration.
