On the evening of Sept. 26, 2013, Law School Professor Mark Lunney from University of New England brought SHUFE Law students an inspiring speech entitled "Legal categories and the different remedies in consumer protection law: contract, tort and statute/code compared". Dr. Shang Shu from SHUFE Law hosted the lecture.
Professor Lunney's research interests are the law of tort, the history of the common law and legal profession. He has made great achievements in the field of tort law, publishing extensively on this area in both Australia and United Kingdom.
During the speech, Professor Lunney mainly examined the remedies available to a consumer when inflicting personal injury caused by unsafe or poor quality products under Australian Law. He illustrated the issue through three cases and analyzed them step by step, guiding the audience in thinking and understanding how the three legal categories, namely contract, tort and statute/code, protect consumer rights in different ways. Besides, Professor Lunney also made some comparisons between Australian and Chinese laws with regard to the subject. Through his explanation, students gained a better understanding about the similarities and differences between common law and civil law systems.
