On the evening of May 3rd, George W. Conk, Adjunct Professor and Senior Fellow from Fordham University, delivered a lecture titled “Oil Spill Compensation U.S. and China” to SHUFE Law students. The lecture was hosted by A/Professor Tang Guanhong.

Professor Conk is an Elected Member of the American Law Institute and one of the top 100 lawyers in New Jersey. His scholarly works, principally about the law of torts, have been published by many authoritative periodicals.

Prof. Conk’s opening remarks were totally in Chinese, which amazed the students. After that, Prof. Conk started his English speech. He talked about the differences between U.S. and Chinese oil pollution compensation systems through a comparison between the BP case and the Conoco Philips case. He pointed out that, in China, the government pays for the damage before negotiating with the polluter about the remedies, which would never happen in America.

During the discussion, Prof. Conk asked three questions concerning the coping strategy in the Conoco Philips case, which provided the students with a chance to freely express their opinions. In the end, Prof. Conk answered questions and enjoyed the appreciation from the audience.
