Shen Ming and Zhao Xiaobo Attend Jessup Training

SHUFE Law Jessup team again enjoyed an inspired training course in the evening of April 21st. As the Jessup club receives more attention among students, those who have interest in moot court also came to join the training program. This time, two popular teachers of SHUFE Law, Shen Ming and Zhao Xiaobo were invited to deliver speeches respectively on their specialized areas, which were jurisprudence and international environmental law.

Hosted by oversea postgraduate Shadrack Makongoro, the fourth Jessup training was very thought-provoking and full of fun, enhancing students’ reasoning ability and broadening their minds as well. In the first section, Shen shared with Jessupers a famous essay named “How to Read a Legal Opinion”. The skill of reading judicial opinions is a must in the Jessup competition, because only when understanding a legal opinion can we find the relevant legal principles and how the laws are applied to facts. Shen also emphasized the importance of knowing the facts and the argument. He put it that court decisions were the main source of law which had binding force and could remind us the reasoning of the majority’s opinion. After Shen’s Lecture, Doctor Zhao Xiaobo gave a speech in which he concluded the source, responsibility, principles, and development of international environmental law. As environmental issues received much concerns in recent years’ Jessup competitions, it’s lucky for Jessupers to have such an expert on environmental law.

Before the end of the training program, Ummy, a foreign friend from SHUFE Law J.M. Center, sang an enchanting song “My love” and SHUFE Law postgraduates Vicent Ren and Jane Zou, the organizers of this night’s training, showed a vivid trial in an army court from the movie Few Good Man and shared their experience of learning through movies. SHUFE Law Jessup team is full of diligent members and warm-hearted teachers. They surely deserve a good result in next year’s competition.
