On the morning of December 8th, Professor Xuan Thao Nguyen from law school of Southern Methodist University delivered a lecture titled “Intellectual Property in Financing” in SHUFE Law. Having distinctive American teaching features, Professor Xuan enjoyed interacting with her audiences.
Intellectual property is closely linked to everyone’s life rather than far away from us. “As you can see, a cup, like the one on the desk now, owns patent and trademark which are among various categories of intellectual property.” Professor Xuan used an example to explain the value of IP. ”IBM invented 4914 patents in the year of 2009, ranking NO.1 in the list of patent creation. As a result the trademark of IBM was assessed about 115B dollars in the same year which was ranked NO.2 in the list of valuation. You could definitely predict the result when you caught the number of IBM’s inventions in 2009. So you can see the positive correlation between the number of patents and its valuation”.
“IP assets not only include such traditional categories as patents, copyright, trademarks and trade secrets, but also some recently emerging kinds like software, database, IP license and secured financing. Nowadays, a company which merely created machines and other products but lack its own innovative patents may never have a bright future.”
After the excellent speech, Professor Xuan interviewed the applicants who applied for the scholarship of the LLM of SMU.
